Why Do Athletes Seek Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care for athletes is gaining traction throughout the professional sporting world. Every team in the NBA and NFL now employ chiropractors as part of their healthcare team! 28 MLB teams had chiropractors on staff in 2016. So why do so many professional teams employ chiropractors? Along with the multitude of everyday conditions chiropractic care can treat, it is also a great way to help the body recover from the damage undertaken during sports activity.
Recovery From Sports Injury
Nagging injuries are extremely detrimental in any sport. While chiropractic care is great for treating sports injuries, its greatest use comes in preventing injuries from happening in the first place. As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Chiropractic can help prevent injuries by improving the body's posture and biomechanics. Recent studies have shown a tremendous association between forward head posture and things like decreased oxygen levels, decreased muscle firing, and increased risk for injuries. A 2015 study in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow surgery found the prevalence of rotator cuff tears to be 2.9% in those with ideal spinal alignment, and a whopping 65.8% in those with forward head posture! These injuries were found in patients coming in for annual physicals. Imagine how much more common these injuries can be in an athlete who is pushing there body to the limit every day! This is why many people choose chiropractic even when they are not in acute pain.
Athletic performance is a culmination of strength, flexibility, speed, and coordination. Any time you can improve one of these areas, you will see an improvement in overall performance. Some sports will have more of an emphasis on strength or flexibility, while others will have an emphasis on speed and coordination. Understanding the movements needed for different sports is the foundation of improving performance in those sports. Whether you're a professional, a high school athlete, or a weekend warrior, chiropractic care can help you by:
- Improving flexibility through specific exercises
- Improving range of motion through joint manipulations
- Improving balance and proprioception through adjustments
- Improving speed through conditioning
- Building strength through a greater range of motion

Sports & Personal History
Alex grew up playing multiple sports from a young age. He began playing hockey at 3 years old (like a true Minnesotan) and continued on to play football, soccer, baseball and lacrosse. Alex finished his high school sports career playing hockey at the Junior Gold "A" level, making it to the state tournament. While attending Normandale Community College in the fall of 2011, Alex's friend Anthony Ulrich introduced him to the sport of disc golf. Alex was instantly hooked and began competing the next year. He played in 4 advanced tournaments, with a noteable 10th place finish at the United States Disc Golf Championships, before starting his professional career. At his first professional event at The Minnesota Majestic, he was carded with 12x World Champion Ken Climo. That was quite the eye-opening experience for Alex, but he put his head down and continued to improve over the next few years. Over the last few years, Alex has chalked up some impressive victories, placements, and titles while climbing to be the #19 ranked player in the world. He also serves as the Vice President of the Minnesota Frisbee Association alongside President and close friend Tommy Locke. Outside of disc golf, Alex works 40+ hour weeks at the Veterinary Hospitals Association in South St. Paul. He currently lives in Rosemount, MN with his fiancee Jessica and four-year-old son Owen.

How Has Chiropractic Care Helped Your Game?
I honestly don't think I would be able to compete at the level that I am without visiting the chiropractor weekly. This game really takes a toll on your rotator cuff and low back. I've been going to the chiropractor for years for low back pain. Since coming to Marty Chiropractic & Wellness, they have added in different therapies to help strengthen my shoulder and improve my game. After only a couple of treatments to my shoulder, it feels stronger than it has for about two years and I couldn't be happier!

About Marty Chiropractic & Wellness
Why We Became Chiropractors
Both Dr. Jeremy Marty and Dr. Joshua Marty became chiropractors after receiving chiropractic care as high school and collegiate athletes. They noticed improved performance, fewer injuries, and faster recovery time. They also noticed that they did not experience the debilitating headaches, digestive issues, chronic pain, and other symptoms that many of their peers struggled with. Their desire to help others led to exploring a career in chiropractic healthcare.
We use an evidence-based approach to chiropractic care. We stay current on research surrounding different treatment options by attending continuing education seminars, reading journals, and attending conferences. We continually work toward additional certifications to provide the best care possible. We believe that everyone should have access to high-quality healthcare, regardless of demographics or income level. We are in-network with most major health insurance companies, state & federal plans, and offer affordable self-payment plans for those without insurance. We also believe healthcare should be accessible and convenient so we offer online scheduling, early morning hours, late evening hours, and Saturday appointments.
In addition to sports chiropractic, we provide treatment after car accidents, chiropractic care for pregnancy, kids chiropractic, nutritional consultations, sports participation physicals, and DoT Physical Examinations for Lakeville and the surrounding communities.
We are very excited to work with Alex and wish him the best this season and throughout his career!
