Children's Chiropractic Care
How Can Chiropractic Care Help Kids?
For children of all ages, physical touch is enormously beneficial. Lack of physical contact can lead babies to fail to thrive and cause depression and emotional disorders in growing children. For so many reasons, chiropractic is a great service to provide to any child.
Chiropractic has been regarded for centuries as a vital aspect of a healthy life. Touch is among the first of the senses to develop in newborns, and babies respond positively to human touch both physically and emotionally. Chiropractors understand the special needs of small children and provide soothing services that is nurturing and enjoyable to babies.
Children of all ages can benefit from chiropractic as a stress reducer. Is Chiropractic Care For Children Safe?
Chiropractic care for children is gentle, safe, and effective. Non-force or low-force techniques are often utilized instead of the high force techniques that most adults are familiar with. Sometimes, a tool such as an Activator will be used to provide a very specific gentle adjustment for your child. These gentle adjustment techniques are great for kids since their growth plates are still developing! Their joints are composed mainly of cartilage instead of bone. This results in children's unique flexibility and relative resistance to severe injury! Most pediatric injuries are things like stress fractures or avulsion fractures, even though kids are running, jumping, and falling down non-stop.
When comparing chiropractic care to traditional medical interventions, chiropractic care is typically far safer! Adverse reactions to things like medications, antibiotics, or minor surgeries are much more common than an adverse reaction to gentle chiropractic care!
When Should I Bring My Child To See A Chiropractor?
Chiropractic care should begin in infancy! Birth trauma is one of the major causes of conditions such as Torticollis and Plagiocephaly (flat-head). We will check your baby's range of motion, muscular tension, and reflexes such as the Fencer Reflex (Demonstrated by Oliver). Babies who only prefer to breastfeed on one side or sleep facing one direction often have an issue in their upper cervical spine. Starting tummy time a few days after birth also helps to strengthen your child's cervical spine! This can be done while snuggling on mom or dad's chest, or lying on a surface such as a yoga mat while supervised.
After your baby's initial examination, we often recommend to return at significant phases of development. Rolling over, sitting up, crawling, and walking all influence the development of the spinal curves. This development, along with development of motor skills such as the Cross-Crawl reflex, play a large role in your child's health, development, and coordination throughout the rest of their life!
We also recommend to bring your children in after any significant bumps, bruises, and falls. We know children will play and tumble, but a fall down the stairs or off playground equipment is different than a fall off the couch. If you are unsure if you should bring your child in, feel free to call or email us and ask if an injury is cause for concern. If your child's mood changes, or they experience severe symptoms such as loss of consciousness, vomiting, swelling, or extreme crying, please inform your pediatrician, call 911 and head to your local emergency room.
