Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Prenatal chiropractic care may help ease labor and delivery

Attending to the unique needs of expectant mothers is the goal of pregnancy chiropractic. Chiropractors are specially trained to tailor their techniques to help alleviate common pregnancy complaints and to protect both mother and child.

Pregnancy chiropractic is unique as expectant mother is carefully supported in order to provide superior comfort and to protect her and the baby from strain or injury. Many areas of the body are avoided during treatment to protect mother and child and extra attention is given to areas of the body that are particularly affected by pregnancy, like the feet and back. A pregnancy massage is not advised during the first trimester, but can provide welcome relief later on, especially during the last few months of pregnancy.

The benefits of pregnancy chiropractic are numerous. It can be supremely comforting both physically and emotionally to an expectant mother, and the psychological benefit itself can be quite therapeutic. In addition to stress and anxiety reduction, pregnancy chiropractic can help reduce expectant mothers’ common aches and annoyances, like swollen ankles and lower back pain.

How Does Your Body Change During Pregnancy?

The pregnant body goes through a tremendous transformation in just a few short months! As your belly grows, the lumbar spinal curve becomes more exaggerated and your center of gravity shifts forward. This can lead to low back pain, hip pain, and a variety of other aches and pains throughout your pregnancy. The biomechanics of your entire body change to accomodate the extra size and weight of the baby. The change in walking pattern can lead to hip pain, knee pain, ankle and foot pain.

You may be familiar with the hormone called Relaxin. Relaxin is responsible for exactly what you would expect; it helps muscles and ligaments relax or loosen in preparation for labor and delivery. This is a great help when you are trying to deliver a child, but ligament laxity can be a contributing factor for pain throughout your pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. Relaxin doesn't know to only target the soft tissues around the pelvis. Like any other hormone, it circulates through the entire body and affects tissues throughout the entire body. This is why some women have more neck pain while others suffer with foot or back pain. Maintaining proper alignment and building strength in the supporting muscles is a great way to treat these pains!

How Can Chiropractic Care Help During Pregnancy?

Lakeville prenatal chiropractor relieves pregnancy pain through chiropractic care

Pregnancy chiropractic care can provide pain relief, ease muscular tension, and help prepare the body for labor and delivery. Maintaining proper alignment of the pelvis gives baby room to grow and position head-down. Easing tension through the round ligaments can alleviate the groin pain and pubic bone pain many pregnant women suffer with. Pregnancy chiropractic care is generally much gentler than the chiropractic care you may be familiar with. We use gentle adjustment techniques instead of forceful, twisting techniques. Much of the treatment is focused on alleviating the stress and tension that comes with carrying another human being! We will also be there for you during the "4th trimester." This is the period of time after baby is born where your body tries to change back to its normal biomechanical structure. This can be an especially painful time for new moms, as your body is more vulnerable to injury for up to 6 months! Your body had 9 months to grow and adapt, but is trying to return to normal much more rapidly. This places tremendous stress on the joints of the lumbar spine and pelvis.
