Treatment for a strained muscle often begins and ends at home. The classic RICE treatment is usually enough for most muscle strains.
- Rest the injured area
- Ice the injured area for approximately 20 minutes at a time
- Compress the area using an ACE bandage or other wrap
- Elevate the injured area to promote circulation and reduce swelling
An athlete with a mild to moderate muscle strain may wish to seek treatment in order to speed up recovery time and stay on the field. Severe muscle strains also warrant additional care. In office treatment often consists of mobilizing the injured joint and using therapies such as EMS or Ultrasound on the strained muscle. Kinesiotape may also be recommended in order to support the muscle and promote healing without restricting an athlete's motion.
